Kyle Edmund loses out to Joao Sousa in Estoril Open quarter-finals

British number one Kyle Edmund bows out of the Estoril Open at the quarter-final stage after losing in three sets to Joao Sousa.

Kyle Edmund has suffered a three-set defeat to Joao Sousa in the quarter-finals of the Estoril Open.

The British number one had been hoping to reach the last four of a tournament for the third time in 2018, but Sousa outlasted the 23-year-old and registered a 6-3 1-6 6-0 win.

One break of serve was enough for Sousa to take the opener in relatively comfortable fashion, but Edmund dropped just four points on serve as he dominated the second.

However, Edmund had no answer to his Portuguese opponent in the decider, with Sousa prevailing in just 87 minutes despite the contest going the distance.

Edmund is now expected to make his way to Madrid for the next Masters Series event as he continues his preparations for the French Open later this month.
