Nicolas Almagro sent crashing out of US Open

Denis Istomin sends Nicolas Almagro out of the US Open in the first round.

Denis Istomin, ranked 65th in the world, has caused an upset at the US Open by dumping 15th seed Nicolas Almagro out in the first round at Flushing Meadows.

The 26-year-old Uzbek took the first set 6-3 before blitzing the second 6-1 for a two-set lead.

However, the Spaniard bit back in the third, taking it 6-4 as he looked to mount a comeback on court four.

That only delayed what had looked inevitable over the first two sets, as Istomin sealed the fourth set 6-3 to book a second-round clash with either Tobias Kamke or Steve Johnson.
