David Ferrer is through to the second round of the French Open by beating Marinko Matosevic 6-4 6-3 6-4.

David Ferrer has recorded a straight-sets win over Marinko Matosevic in the first round of the French Open.

The fourth seed had to work hard early on, but was able to break his Australian opponent late in the first set to take it 6-4.

The Spaniard comfortably claimed the second set 6-3, but Matosevic fought back at the start of the third set, taking a 4-3 lead.

However, Ferrer upped the tempo and claimed the next three games to secure his spot in the second round.

Ferrer will face either Steve Johnson or Albert Montanes in the next round.
