Nicolas Almagro survives a shaky start to breeze past compatriot Daniel Gimeno-Traver in straight sets on day three of the Australian Open.

Tenth seed Nicolas Almagro triumphed in straight sets against fellow Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver this morning to qualify for the Australian Open third round.

Almagro showed signs of tiredness in the early going after being taken all the way by Steve Johnson on Monday in a five-set thriller.

Gimeno-Traver failed to capitalise and tightened up at the end of the first, eventually falling behind by six games to four.

Almagro made sure his opponent had no way back into the match after surviving that early scare, showing his superiority to take the next two sets with minimal fuss, winning the contest 6-4 6-1 6-2.

The 27-year-old has made at least the last 16 on each of his last three visits to Melbourne and ensured that a potential fourth-round clash with Janko Tipsarevic remains on the cards in just under two hours.
