Although the Briton progresses in straight sets, the Frenchman battled hard in a closely-fought match at Flushing Meadows.

The first set looked to be heading to a tie-break after the first 11 games went with serve, but the 2012 champion forced a couple of mistakes from the ninth seed late in the set to clinch the opener.

Tsonga seemed to respond well, getting a break at the start of the second, but Murray won three games in a row while trailing 4-2 to get a foothold in the set before taking a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Scot found himself a break down again early in the third, but managed to come back again, leaving Tsonga to serve to keep himself in the match.

However, nerves appeared to get the better of the French player as he allowed Murray to take a 40-0 lead, before the eighth seed attacked a slow second serve with a powerful return to seal his spot in the last eight.

Murray will face world number one Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals later this week.
