Marin Cilic brushes aside Hiroko Moriya to progress at Wimbledon

Reigning US Open champion Marin Cilic earns a 6-3 6-2 7-6(4) victory over Hiroki Moriya at the first-round stage of Wimbledon.

Marin Cilic has kicked off his Wimbledon campaign with a commanding straight-sets victory over Hiroki Moriya.

The reigning US Open champion came out on top 6-3 6-2 7-6(4) to advance through to the second round.

Having broken his opponent's serve in just the second game, Cilic was able to ease into an early three-game lead in the opener.

It was a case of remaining professional from that point on, as last year's quarter-finalist at this Grand Slam event saw out the first set before once against breaking Moriya early on in the second.

The Japanese pro, who has failed to get beyond the first-round stage at any of his three majors to date, struggled to match his more experienced opponent and saw the second set slip away in a similar manner to the first.

A loss of serve in the first game of the third set ensured that Cilic found himself in the driving seat, but Moriya still had enough in the tank to push the Croatian a little further.

Moriya broke Cilic in the sixth game to force a tie-break, but it was the ninth seed who held his nerve to book a place in round two.
