Peter Waterfield admits he apologised to Tom Daley for making a mistake during their 10m synchronised platform final.

Peter Waterfield has revealed that he apologised to diving partner Tom Daley following a mistake in the synchronised 10m platform.

The duo finished in fourth place after a disappointing attempt on their fourth dive effectively destroyed their chances of claiming a medal in London.

"After that fourth dive I actually said sorry to Tom. I said, 'sorry mate'," Waterfield said. "That's when he said, 'don't worry we've got our next one and we've got a big one'. Unfortunately it just wasn't big enough to get back."

However, Daley refused to allow his partner to shoulder the blame for the performance.

The 18-year-old said: "We're a team and we win together and we lose together. We're proud of being here at the Olympic Games in front of a home crowd."

China's Yuan Cao and Tanquan Zhang were crowned champions in the event at the Aquatics Centre.
