Manchester United and Arsenal reportedly make contact with Atalanta BC over a possible summer transfer for Serie A top scorer Mateo Retegui.

Manchester United and Arsenal have reportedly expressed their interest in signing Atalanta BC striker Mateo Retegui.

The 25-year-old joined La Dea from Genoa last summer for around €28m, signing a contract until June 2028, and he has since enjoyed a magnificent season in front of goal.

Retegui is leading the race for the Serie A Golden Boot having scored 20 goals in 22 appearances, including four goals netted in Atalanta's 5-0 thrashing of Hellas Verona last weekend.

The Argentine-born Italy international is one of only 10 players in Europe who has scored at least 20 league goals so far this season, just one goal behind Bayern Munich's Harry Kane (21) and two behind both Sporting Lisbon's Viktor Gyokeres and Liverpool's Mohamed Salah (both 22).

Retegui has also found the net three times in nine Champions League outings this term, although he was unable to get his name on the scoresheet in Atalanta's 2-1 playoff first-leg loss to Club Brugge on Wednesday.

Four clubs enter race for Atalanta striker Retegui

Atalanta's No.32 has admirably elevated his game to new heights this season and has stepped up for Gian Piero Gasperini's side in the absence of injured striker Gianluca Scamacca.

Retegui's impressive form is understood to have caught the eye of a number of top European clubs, with Foot Mercato claiming that Man United and Arsenal have 'already contacted the Bergamo management' to discuss a possible summer transfer.

The report adds that fellow Premier League side Aston Villa and Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain have been interested in signing Retegui for 'a while'.

Atalanta are believed to be keen to keep hold of Retegui, but it is claimed that the striker will become one of the big summer attractions in a few months.

Could Retegui join Man United or Arsenal?

Both Man United and Arsenal are known to be in the market for a new striker, and after failing to bolster their frontlines in January, they are expected to prioritise at least one new addition in the attacking department this summer.

Red Devils duo Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have failed to reach the heights expected since moving to Old Trafford, scoring just five goals between them in what has been a bitterly disappointing 2024-25 Premier League campaign.

Man United's interest in Retegui comes just over two years after they forked out around £72m to sign Hojlund from Atalanta, while Zirkzee only joined the Red Devils from Bologna for around £42m last summer.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are set to play the rest of this season without a natural centre-forward, as both Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz are ruled out for the rest of the campaign with injuries, the latter of whom sustained a torn hamstring on the club's training trip to Dubai.

The Gunners are expected to spend big on a new striker in the summer and the likes of Alexander Isak, Benjamin Sesko and Gyokeres are all believed to be on their radar, while it remains unknown as to where Retegui ranks on their list of striker targets.
