Martin Keown: 'Arsenal have missed opportunity in transfer window'

Ex-Arsenal defender Martin Keown says that the Gunners have missed the opportunity to strengthen their attacking options during the transfer window.

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has suggested that the Gunners have missed the opportunity to strengthen their attacking options during the transfer window.

The North Londoners were heavily linked with a move for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema and Paris Saint-Germain's Edinson Cavani before the transfer window closed, although neither left their respective clubs.

Arsenal's only signing of the summer was the capture of goalkeeper Petr Cech from Chelsea.

"There seems to be utter madness in the transfer window and Arsene Wenger has stepped away from it," Keown told BBC Sport.

"They badly needed a striker. Only time will tell if he is right but the early signs are that it is an area of weakness. I think there's been a missed opportunity."

Arsenal return to Premier League action against Stoke City on September 12.
