Inter came closest early on when the inventive Gary Medel found Mauro Icardi with a neat through-ball, leaving the striker to fire his shot straight at Craig Gordon.
The Celtic stopper was called into action again a few minutes later, this time as Rodrigo Palacio attempted to test the keeper after profiting from some good work from Fredy Guarin.
Inter continued to look menacing in the first half and Guarin was perhaps guilty of missing a good chance when he fired wide with his right following Icardi's pass.
Celtic's hopes of potentially reaching the last-16 stage took a blow before the break, as Virgil van Dijk received his second yellow card of the game and was dismissed in the 36th minute.

The away side's mammoth task was evident in the second period with Inter taking possessional control, but still Celtic held firm to keep out early efforts from both Hernanes and Guarin.
Xherdan Shaqiri sought to exploit the extra space and his well-worked corner found Rodrigo Palacio, who couldn't keep his header on target.
Inter finally found the goal their second-half dominance deserved when Guarin nailed a standout shot into the top corner with two minutes to play, leaving the final score at 1-0.
