Preview: Crystal Palace vs. Sevilla - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's friendly clash between Crystal Palace and Sevilla, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Crystal Palace will continue their preparations for their 2023-24 Premier League campaign with a friendly against Europa League holders Sevilla in Michigan on Sunday night.

The Eagles are building towards their season opener against Sheffield United on August 12, while Sevilla will start their La Liga campaign at home to Valencia on August 11.

Palace have been busy this summer in terms of friendlies, already taking to the field on five occasions, opening their preparations with a 1-0 loss at Barnet on July 11.

Roy Hodgson's side then drew with Brondby before beating Crawley Town and Watford in back-to-back matches, but they will enter this contest off the back of a 2-1 lost to Millonarios.

Palace now only have two more friendlies before the start of competitive action, facing Sevilla on Sunday evening and then Lyon on August 5, with their 2023-24 Premier League opener coming away to newly-promoted Sheffield United on August 12.

The Eagles have only made one signing this summer, bringing in Jefferson Lerma from Bournemouth on a free transfer, but there will be more incomings before the end of the transfer window.

Hodgson's team finished 11th in the Premier League last season, and it is difficult to see them pushing much higher up the table without significant investment over the next four weeks.

Sevilla, meanwhile, are building towards their 2023-24 La Liga opener against Valencia on August 11, and they have three more friendlies in the diary this summer.

Jose Luis Mendilibar's side will face Real Betis and Atletico Madrid in their final two pre-season matches before the return of competitive action.

Sevilla have actually already played five times this summer, beating Cordoba, Ceuta and Independiente del Valle in their opening three matches before losing to Hansa Rostock and Magdeburg.

Los Nervionenses disappointed in La Liga last season, finishing 12th in the table, but they will be in the Champions League during the 2023-24 campaign due to their Europa League success.

The Spanish outfit have made two signings this summer, with Loic Bade joining on a permanent basis from Rennes, while Adria Pedrosa has arrived on a free transfer from Espanyol.

Team News

Palace head coach Hodgson is expected to make changes to the side that took to the field for the first whistle against Millonarios last time out.

Eberechi Eze and Odsonne Edouard are both likely to earn recalls, while there should also be a start for Cheick Doucoure, who has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool this summer.

There will once again be wholesale changes throughout the contest, but there is expected to be a familiar look to the starting side, with new signing Lerma also set to continue in central midfield.

Sevilla, meanwhile, are also set to start with a familiar XI before introducing some squad players and youngsters in the second half of the match.

Youssef En-Nesyri was the team's top goalscorer last season but is currently being linked with a move away from the club, so his involvement in this contest is unclear.

Rafa Mir and Lucas Ocampos are both expected to feature in the final third of the field, while Joan Jordan and Thomas Delaney could earn starts in the middle of the park.

Crystal Palace possible starting lineup:
Matthews; Ward, Andersen, Guehi, Clyne; Lerma, Doucoure; Mateta, Hughes, Eze; Edouard

Sevilla possible starting lineup:
Dmitrovic; Navas, Rekik, Bade, Acuna; Delaney, Jordan, Rakitic; Lamela, Mir, Ocampos

SM words green background

We say: Crystal Palace 1-1 Sevilla

Both managers will view this match as valuable preparation for their respective seasons, and we are expecting a competitive game on Sunday. It is always difficult to know exactly what to expect from these type of friendlies, but the two teams are relatively well-matched, so we are predicting a low-scoring draw.
