Roy Hodgson "more than satisfied" with England win in San Marino

Roy Hodgson hails England's performance in San Marino and defends his decision to substitute Wayne Rooney.

England manager Roy Hodgson has claimed that he is "more than satisfied" with the manner of his team's win in San Marino.

The Three Lions wrapped up qualification for next year's finals in France with a 6-0 victory in Serravalle, with Wayne Rooney equalling Sir Bobby Charlton's goalscoring record of 49.

However, Hodgson defended his decision to replace Rooney during the game, saying that he wanted to protect a number of his squad.

Hodgson told ITV Sport: "I am more than satisfied and we won it with a good margin.

"To be honest, we wanted to protect one or two players and it was in our thoughts we would try to keep Wayne on for 45 to a maximum of 60 minutes.

"One or two who weren't in contention to play on Tuesday night have pushed their claims and Jonjo Shelvey deserves a mention. In Michael Carrick and Jonjo we have two very good passers in that midfield position and when Jack Wilshere gets back we will have even more competition."

England face Switzerland on Tuesday at Wembley.
