Legendary Italian forward Luca Toni announces retirement plans

Luca Toni says that "the time has come to stop" playing professional football following an illustrious career spanning back more than two decades.

Former Italy international Luca Toni has suggested that he will bring an end to his playing days at the end of the current season.

The 38-year-old, who has enjoyed an illustrious career with the likes of Bayern Munich, Juventus, Roma and Fiorentina, is currently plying his trade at Hellas Verona.

Despite being in the twilight of his career, Toni still scored 22 goals last time out in Serie A on his way to finishing joint-top scorer in the Italian top flight.

However, the 300-goal striker plans to call it a day next summer regardless of how Verona's campaign pans out, with the Gialloblu currently at the foot of the table and still without a win.

Speaking to Sky Italia, he said: "I think the time has come to stop. I hope to celebrate it by keeping Verona safe in Serie A."

Toni has been at Verona since joining as a free agent in 2013, having previously taken in spells at Empoli, Brescia, Palermo, Genoa and Al-Nasr among others.
