Liverpool suffering worst goal drought for 20 years

Liverpool go four top-flight matches without scoring for the first time since May 2000 after Thursday's 1-0 defeat to Burnley at Anfield.

Liverpool are suffering their worst top-flight goal drought for 20 years following a 1-0 home defeat to Burnley on Thursday evening.

Before welcoming Sean Dyche's men to Merseyside, the Reds had not tasted a Premier League defeat at Anfield since April 2017, but Ashley Barnes's penalty was enough to propel Burnley to a historic win.

The champions are in a rut at the moment and have now failed to win in five top-flight matches since a 7-0 thrashing of Crystal Palace before Christmas.

Despite boasting a formidable attacking trio of Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, the Reds have now gone four league matches without scoring for the first time since May 2000, with none of their 87 shots since Mane's goal against West Bromwich Albion finding the back of the net.

On an individual level, a team managed by Jurgen Klopp have now failed to score in four league matches since December 2006, during which time he was in charge of Bundesliga side Mainz 05.

Thursday's defeat leaves Liverpool fourth in the table - six points behind leaders and bitter rivals Manchester United.
