Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola expects Norwegian striker Erling Braut Haaland to spend time in Marbella during the 2022 World Cup between November and December.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola expects Erling Braut Haaland to spend time in Marbella during the 2022 World Cup between November and December.

The 22-year-old has made an exceptional start to life at the Etihad Stadium, scoring 22 goals in just 15 appearances across all competitions.

However, City's in-form striker will not be heading to Qatar for this year's winter World Cup as his Norway side failed to qualify for the tournament.

Guardiola has since confirmed that Haaland will be granted a holiday, which he is set to spend in either the South of Spain or his native Norway, and he hopes the striker will return from his break in peak condition when Premier League action resumes.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of City's Champions League clash away against Haaland's former club Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday, Guardiola said: "He will be in Marbella for sure, or in Norway. It depends on how he behaves in Marbella as to how good he is for the second half of the season."

"I'm pretty sure he will love to be at the World Cup and maybe the next one or Euros he will. But he has a house in Marbella, go there, play golf, hopefully, he don't drink much, eat much and come back fit."

Guardiola added: "This is the first time in our lives [a winter World Cup has] happened so we don't know how players will come back from the World Cup.

"If six come back as champions they will be very happy, or they could come back depressed. Some may get knocked out early and have holidays. But loads of players will miss the World Cup because of the insane fixtures. We will see when they come back."

After netting 86 goals in 89 matches for Dortmund, Haaland had continued his fine form in front of goal for Man City, averaging over a goal a game in all competitions so far this season.

Indeed, one of Haaland's five Champions League goals this campaign came against Dortmund in the reverse fixture at the Etihad Stadium last month, with the Norwegian netting a brilliant acrobatic strike to help the Citizens come from behind to win 2-1.

Guardiola has been impressed with Haaland's work ethic and hunger to score goals, but the Spaniard has revealed one aspect of the striker's game that has surprised him.

"I didn't know how good he was moving in small spaces in the box, he scores a lot in the box," Guardiola added. "He goes away from the action to be closer to the goal, these kind of moments is not easy for a striker."

"Apart from that, his work ethic, he is one of the first to arrive for the training centre, one of the last to leave. He looks after his body, well educated in how he has to live as a professional and he has the intent to get better.

"Last season he had a few injury problems but this year thanks to our doctors and physios he can play every three days which is really important for us and for him."

Haaland is not the only player that Guardiola has praised ahead of Tuesday's game, as he has also talked up the "special mentality" of Dortmund and England star Jude Bellingham, who scored for the German club against City last month.

City have already qualified for the last 16, but they will seal top spot in Group G if they avoid defeat against Dortmund.
