United could have taken the lead in the opening minutes of the game as Tom Cleverley picked up the ball in a central position inside the box, but his effort was kept out by a fine save from the diving Adrian, who got down to his right to turn the ball away.
Wayne Rooney looked menacing from the start and he played in Januzaj whose shot was well-blocked by the West Ham defence.
Jonny Evans made a fine interception as the visitors looked to create their first chance, with the United defender getting across to block Mohamed Diame, who left his foot in the defender's back much to the dismay of David Moyes.
United continued to dominate and Phil Jones almost found their opener as he fired towards the bottom corner, though Adrian did well again to get down low to make the save.
Former United man Ravel Morrison was lucky to still be on the pitch after he swiped Cleverley's legs away, but he was only dealt a yellow card by the referee.
The hosts grabbed the lead they deserved in the 26th minute as Welbeck pulled off a fine one-two with Rooney, before drilling the ball past Adrian in the West Ham goal.
United doubled their lead 10 minutes later, this time as Welbeck fed Januzaj inside the box, with the youngster rifling a shot into the bottom corner.

Javier Hernandez had a goal ruled out for offside in the 68th minute, however it did not matter as substitute Young crashed home a superb solo effort in the 72nd minute to put United 3-0 up.
West Ham notched themselves a consolation goal in the 81st minute through Carlton Cole, though it was not enough as the game ended 3-1 to the hosts.
