A report claims that Juan Mata was offered a huge salary to join Shanghai SIPG, but he turned down the Chinese club to renew his contract with Manchester United.

Juan Mata reportedly turned down wages of £550,000 a week from Chinese Super League side Shanghai SIPG before committing his future to Manchester United.

The Spanish midfielder took up the option of a two-year contract extension at Old Trafford last month after reaching the end of his previous deal.

Mata had been strongly tipped to leave United after five-and-a-half years at the club, but he was persuaded to stay on until the age of 33, with the option of another 12 months.

According to 90min, the former Chelsea star's decision to remain is even more surprising given that he was offered a mammoth salary to join Shanghai SIPG.

United used Mata 32 times in all competitions last season, with exactly half of those appearances being Premier League starts.
