Manchester United are allegedly plotting a summer swoop for Real Madrid star Toni Kroos.
According to AS, Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho sees the German as an "essential" addition to his midfield.
Mourinho has already bolstered his midfield this summer with the acquisition of Brazil international Fred.
United have been tipped to lodge a big-money bid for Kroos in the hope of pairing him up with Fred, but the report suggests that new Real head coach Julen Lopetegui is keen to retain the 28-year-old's services.
Kroos was part of the Germany side which finished bottom of Group F at the World Cup finals.
