Hamilton Academical edge shootout with Motherwell

Hamilton Academical win 6-5 in a penalty shootout with Motherwell to move into the fourth round of the League Cup.

Hamilton Academical moved into the fourth round of the Scottish League Cup after a 6-5 penalty-shootout victory over Motherwell this evening.

Juan Andreu's long-range effort was thwarted by Accies keeper Dan Twardzik in the first half.

Lionel Ainsworth then had a good chance for the visitors 11 minutes after the restart, but he couldn't adjust his body in time before Accies recovered.

Stephen Hendrie was given his marching orders for Hamilton after receiving his second booking of the game.

Michael McGovern denied Motherwell with a reflex save late on when he got a hand to Iain Vigurs's powerful close-range volley.

Motherwell pushed for the winning goal in normal time and Henrik Ojamaa flashed a shot wide of the goal from outside the box with seven minutes remaining.

The visitors' numerical advantage was wiped out in extra time when Mark O'Brien was sent off, and neither side could find the breakthrough in the extended period.

Both sides were accurate from 12 yards but it was Simon Ramsden who missed the decisive spot kick for 'Well before Craig Watson sent the home side through.
