Real came close to taking a lead inside the opening 10 minutes, when Cristiano Ronaldo found some space inside the penalty area, but his curling effort was kept out by the crossbar.

The Portuguese international had another chance in the 15th minute when he tried to convert from an Angel di Maria cross.

Wilfredo Caballero had to remain sharp in goal for Malaga, as he managed to keep an effort from Alvaro Morata out with his fingertips late in the half.

Malaga's best change came just before the break as Eliseu picked up the ball, but his close-range effort went wide.
