Roy Keane: Martin O'Neill "strong" to appoint me

Roy Keane says that Martin O'Neill is "strong" for appointing him as his assistant manager for the Republic of Ireland.

Roy Keane believes that Martin O'Neill's decision to appoint him as his assistant for the Republic of Ireland shows strength of character.

The 42-year-old will work alongside the former Leicester City, Celtic and Sunderland boss, who has succeeded Giovanni Trapattoni as the Green Army prepare for the Euro 2016 qualifying campaign.

"We are certainly not buddies but hopefully we will work well together," the former Manchester United midfielder told Sky Sports News.

"We have come across each other a little bit covering a couple of matches but we are certainly not a pals' act. Martin is a very serious manager and I am hoping he is looking at me thinking I can be a decent coach or manager.

"It shows how strong Martin is, the fact he has brought me on board. Unfortunately, people might see me as a traitor or troublemaker of some sort but hopefully Martin's seen something in me which means I have got a lot to offer."

Ireland take on Latvia in a friendly match on Friday.
