Southampton midfielder Sofiane Boufal is hopeful that his match-winning wonder goal against West Bromwich Albion will earn him a starting role in the team.

Southampton midfielder Sofiane Boufal has acknowledged that his winning goal in the 1-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion this evening was "special".

Boufal lit up an otherwise uneventful contest at St Mary's with a stunning solo effort five minutes from time, collecting the ball deep inside his own half before beating five defenders and stroking his finish into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

The Moroccan had only been introduced off the bench four minutes previously, but he is hopeful that his match-winning exploits will earn him a more regular role in Mauricio Pellegrino's side.

"My first Premier League goal of this season, yes, it's very special - the most important thing is we take three points - more important than my goal," he told BT Sport.

"I scored one in France I remember, but I am so happy with this goal. I am so hungry. The most important thing is to show the manager on the pitch I can play with this team."

Boufal's goal was his first in the league since December 2016 and only his second since joining Southampton from Lille.
