Team News: Jan Vertonghen misses Aston Villa clash due to illness

Tottenham Hotspur will be without Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen for the visit of Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Jan Vertonghen will sit out Tottenham Hotspur's Premier League clash with Aston Villa after failing to shake off an illness.

That means that Federico Fazio makes his first start for Spurs in more than two months, alongside Eric Dier, Vlad Chiriches and Danny Rose in the home side's back line.

Michel Vorm continues to deputise in goal for the Lilywhites as first-choice shot-stopper Hugo Lloris remains sidelined with a knee injury.

Tim Sherwood, making his first visit to White Hart Lane since he was sacked as Spurs boss last summer, is without Scott Sinclair, Alan Hutton, Carles Gil and Ashley Westwood.

Aly Cissokho has returned to training for the Villans this week, but Sherwood has opted to name an unchanged starting lineup from the team that drew 3-3 with Queens Park Rangers in midweek.

Tottenham Hotspur: Vorm, Chiriches, Dier, Fazio, Rose, Bentaleb, Mason, Townsend, Eriksen, Chadli, Kane
Subs: Friedel, Paulinho, Soldado, Lamela, Yedlin, Stambouli, Davies

Aston Villa: Guzan, Bacuna, Vlaar, Clark, Richardson, Cleverley, Delph, Sanchez, Grealish, Agbonlahor, Benteke
Subs: Given, Baker, Okore, Weimann, Cole, N'Zogbia, Lowton
