Graeme Sharp is confident that Mikel Arteta can take on Cesc Fabregas's role in midfield after the Spaniard joined Arsenal from Everton on a long-term deal.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger clinched the Everton midfielder from Merseyside within the last hours of the 11pm transfer cut-off time yesterday (Wednesday).
Former Toffees striker Sharp believes that although the signing of the 29-year-old was a shock, the Spaniard can make an impact at the Emirates.
“It was a surprise to everybody,” Sharp told talkSPORT.“People thought if anyone was going to go it would be Phil Jagielka, no-one had even mentioned Mikel Arteta.
“His form wasn’t great last year but if you want someone to replace Fabregas then they’ve got the ideal person. He’s a little bit older now, but I still think it’s a fantastic deal for Arsenal.
“David Moyes will be frustrated this morning. I don’t think any manager wants to lose their best players and Mikel Arteta comes into that category.”
Meanwhile, Everton were forced to lose another member of their squad after they accepted a reported £4m bid for Jermaine Beckford.
