Arsenal 'eye £15m Benedikt Howedes swoop'

Schalke defender Benedikt Howedes will be the subject of a January bid from Arsenal, according to reports.

Arsenal are reportedly ready to step up their pursuit of Schalke 04 defender Benedikt Howedes.

The Gunners have been criticised by some observers for poor defensive performances and have not improved their back line significantly in recent years.

However, The People claims that manager Arsene Wenger is keen on a deal for Howedes and sent Arsenal scouts to watch the German international play in Schalke's 4-0 win over Stuttgart last weekend.

While the 26-year-old still has two years left on his current contract with the Royal Blues, Arsenal are hoping that his friendship with Per Mertesacker will help attract the centre-back to the Emirates Stadium.

Howedes, who can play at left-back or in the heart of the back line, is said to be valued at £15m, a price tag that is unlikely to put off the Premier League club.
