Barnsley sign Wayne Rooney's younger brother John, subject to Football League approval.

Barnsley have signed striker John Rooney until the end of the season, subject to Football League approval.

Rooney, who is the younger brother of Manchester United striker Wayne, has received international clearance to move to Oakwell. However, he must await approval from the Football League after there were concerns that his contract with his former club Orlando City remained valid after August 31.

If it is deemed that he still had a contract with Orlando in September, he will not be allowed to join Barnsley until the start of the January transfer window.

The 21-year-old began his career at Macclesfield before he moved to New York Red Bulls in 2011.
