Chelsea began the defence of their Champions League title with a 2-2 draw against Italian side Juventus this evening.

It looked as though the Blues were heading for all three points when Oscar put them two goals up in the first half, only for the Serie A champions to respond with a brace of their own.

Was the result fair?

No doubt. Juventus have to be praised for the way that they responded to going two goals behind. Having equalised, the Italians looked the most likely side to win the match, but in the end a draw was certainly fair.

Chelesea's performance

Mixed would be the best word to use. At times they looked neat and tidy, but on others they were extremely wasteful. Fernando Torres was far too isolated, while the recently-influential Eden Hazard showed very little.

Juventus's performance

Having conceded two goals from Oscar that they could have done very little about, the Old Lady reacted magnificently. If anybody was going to win the game at the end, it would have been Juventus.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Arturo Vidal came into this match with a big reputation and he showed why here. His workrate in the middle of the pitch was outstanding and he barely gave away possession. He capped his performance off with his side's first goal and showed why he has been linked with the likes of Manchester United and Barcelona.

Biggest gaffe

With only a few minutes remaining and Chelsea leading 2-1, John Obi Mikel gifted Juve the ball inside the Chelsea half. John Terry then tried to play offside but Fabio Quagliarella had other ideas. The substitute made the Blues pair look silly as he went on to slot the ball into the net to give his side a share of the spoils.

Referee's performance

Pedro Proenca is regarded as one of the best referees in the business and on this performance you can see why. In truth he did very little to draw attention to himself, which is always the sign of a good official.

What next?

Chelsea: The Blues travel to little-known Danish champions Nordsjaelland next time out in the Champions League. It's a game that they will be expected to take three points from. Before that they have Stoke City in the Premier League.

Juventus: Ukrainians Shakhtar Donetsk visit Turin on matchday two. A win there will put them in command of the group.
