Empoli seal Coppa Italia progress against Genoa

Goals from Diego Laxalt and Levan Mchedlidze give Empoli a 2-0 win at home to Genoa in the last 16 of the Coppa Italia.

Empoli have earned a 2-0 win at home to Genoa to seal their place in the last 16 of the Coppa Italia.

The hosts took the lead with just five minutes on the clock when Diego Laxalt saw his deflected shot from the edge of the box make its way past the goalkeeper.

Their second goal arrived in style with 17 minutes left as Levan Mchedlidze's cheeky flick made sure of the victory following a cross from the left.

Maurizio Sarri's side will travel to Roma in the next round of the competition when it resumes in January.
