Labour MP wants England to boycott 2018 World Cup

England should take a stand against FIFA and boycott the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, says Labour leader candidate Andy Burnham.

Labour leader candidate Andy Burnham has called on England to boycott the 2018 World Cup in protest against FIFA.

Football's governing body has come under intense scrutiny in the last week after the FBI arrested multiple officials on corruption charges.

Reports have suggested that investigations are also being carried out into the bidding process for the 2018 tournament, which England lost to Russia, and the 2022 edition in Qatar.

Burnham told Pienaar's Politics: "I've long had my doubts about Russia holding the next World Cup. Now with all of this, I believe there is a pretty overwhelming case for England taking a stand and saying we should not participate in the next World Cup given the current appalling state of FIFA."

Sepp Blatter retained his FIFA presidency on Friday and will serve for a fifth term.
