Wayne Rooney praises England's attacking approach

England striker Wayne Rooney insists that Roy Hodgson's bold team selection created the platform for last night's 4-1 win over Montenegro.

England striker Wayne Rooney has declared that he revelled in Roy Hodgson's approach to tonight's crucial World Cup qualifier with Montenegro, which featured four attacking options.

Rooney played just behind Daniel Sturridge in the 4-1 win at Wembley with Danny Welbeck also starting, while Andros Townsend made his debut in an advanced wide position.

The Manchester United forward has insisted that Hodgson deserves credit for giving his forwards creative licence to break down a stubborn Montenegro rearguard.

He told Sky Sports News: "It was great. Exciting, with a lot of speed and with experience of Steve Gerrard and Frank Lampard behind us.

"The manager gave us the freedom and platform to go out and express ourselves and I thought the four of us did that, especially Andros, that was some debut.

"It was a tough game. I think getting the goal so early in the second half was vital and we excelled after that and deserved the three points."

Hodgson's side are now one win away from earning a place in next summer's South American showpiece, ahead of Tuesday's final qualifier at home to Poland.
