Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore insists that the league cannot be blamed for England's lack of success.

Richard Scudamore has insisted that the failures of the England national team cannot be blamed on the Premier League.

The Three Lions last tasted international success when they lifted the World Cup in 1966 and have struggled to make an impact at recent major competitions.

"It frustrates me when people say we are to blame because it is so palpably not true," The Express quotes the Premier League chief executive as saying. "The whole thing seems to me that if England don't win something it is someone else's fault.

"I have never said in my 15 years with the Premier League that the success of the competition – or lack of it – is someone else's fault. You have got to make it yourself.

"Let's run the reverse argument. Where does that leave the people at the FA in terms of their accountability? It can't be our fault."

The Premier League began in 1992 and Scudamore has been chief executive of the league since 1999.
