Tottenham 'contemplating' £50m midfielder transfer as Ange Postecoglou identifies Yves Bissouma replacement

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly weighing up a move for one of Wolverhampton Wanderers' key midfielders, who could cost in the region of £50m this summer.

Tottenham Hotspur have joined the ever-growing list of clubs interested in signing Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes, according to a report.

The 24-year-old has forged an engine-room relationship with compatriot Andre at Molineux and has quickly adapted to life in England since joining the club midway through the 2022-23 season.

Gomes has registered four goals and two assists from 31 appearances in all tournaments this season, but Vitor Pereira's men are still in trouble as they lie 17th in the Premier League rankings.

Wolves do have a healthy nine-point cushion over Leicester City and Ipswich Town in the relegation zone, but even if they do manage to stay up, some of their top talents could be poached by rival clubs.

Gomes would likely be among a handful of Old Gold players who could be sold for a significant fee this summer, and according to GIVEMESPORT, Tottenham have now thrown their hat into the ring and are 'circling' ahead of the reopening of the window.

Lilywhites chiefs have supposedly been running the rule over the 24-year-old for the last year, and the North London giants are now weighing up whether to make an approach for his services.

Wolves do not intend to let Gomes leave on the cheap, though, as the midfielder's contract does not expire until 2028, and they will be in a strong negotiating position if they manage to avoid relegation to the second tier.

However, the report suggests that a fee of £50m could be enough to prise Gomes away from Wolves, who also have the option to extend his contract by a further 12 months.

The Old Gold paid just £15.7m to bring the Brazilian to the Premier League from Flamengo in January 2023, since when he has come up with seven goals and three assists in 80 matches for the club.

Gomes could arrive at Tottenham as a successor to Yves Bissouma, who is out of contract in the summer of 2026, and Spurs are supposedly prepared to entertain bids for the Mali midfielder this summer.

The Lilywhites may have to fend off Liverpool and Manchester United to strike a deal for Gomes, though, and Ange Postecoglou's side would need to jump through more hoops before they can win the race for the South American.

Could Gomes deal hinge on Cunha future?

As well as the in-demand Gomes, Wolves are also at risk of losing attacking talisman Matheus Cunha and key defender Rayan Ait-Nouri when the summer window opens for business.

However, the report adds that the West Midlands side are reluctant to let both Cunha and Gomes leave in the same window, and they are actually 'sceptical' whether any serious offers will be tabled for the latter.

Tottenham are also believed to be one of four parties interested in a deal for Ait-Nouri, whose asking price has allegedly been revealed amid glances from Spurs, Arsenal, Man United and Liverpool.
