Roy Hodgson: 'Ross Barkley must make better decisions'

England manager Roy Hodgson believes that Ross Barkley must make better decisions when in possession.

England manager Roy Hodgson has told Ross Barkley that he must make better decisions on the pitch following the 2-2 draw with Ecuador.

Despite suggesting that Barkley continues to be in contention for a starting place at the World Cup, Hodgson claims that it was unfair for so much attention to be given to the Everton attacking midfielder's display.

"I will be prepared to start any of the players in any game, but I'm not prepared to address your obsession with Ross Barkley," the England boss told reporters in Miami.

"If he's going to be the player we want him to be, he has to make better decisions when he turns with the ball.

"That's not a criticism, but there were other performances out there today. [Alex] Oxlade-Chamberlain and Phil Jones were outstanding, as was Jack Wilshere in the middle of the park, while Rickie Lambert scored a magnificent goal."

Barkley was making just his fifth appearance for England on Wednesday night.
