Wayne Rooney content with left-side role

England striker Wayne Rooney reveals that he is happy to play in any role for Roy Hodgson's side at the World Cup.

England striker Wayne Rooney has revealed that he is content to play in any role for the Three Lions as long as he is in the starting lineup.

The 28-year-old has been used in variety of positions in the build-up to the World Cup, including on the left wing, where he featured in the 2-2 draw with Ecuador, getting on the scoresheet in the process.

Rooney told The People: "I am not going to stop playing for England because I was moved out to the left, am I? I'm happy to play wherever I am needed – even in goal.

"I have played out on the left quite a lot in my career. I've played out on the right as well, but probably more on the left. The manager has asked me to play there and I have no problem doing it."

England face Italy in their World Cup opener next Saturday.
