Alessandro Matri had an early sight of goal for the home side, but after being picked out in the box he headed wide of the far post.

Midway through the half Milan took the lead through Philippe Mexes, who slotted home from close range after Mario Balotelli's free kick had been parried by the keeper.

Sulley Muntari came close to scoring a second for the visitors soon after, but Neto was alert to push his powerful strike over the bar.

Milan continued to look the more threatening of the two sides and Adel Taarabt saw his long-range effort tipped over by Neto.
