Fiorentina held by Sassuolo

Fiorentina fail to return to the top of Serie A following a 1-1 draw with Sassuolo at the Mapei Stadium.

Fiorentina have missed out on the chance to move top of Serie A after being held to a 1-1 draw by Sassuolo this evening.

It took the visitors five minutes to break the deadlock as Borja Valero was on hand to slot into the corner, after Giuseppe Rossi's sliced attempt had fallen kindly to him inside the box.

Valero soon had another chance for Fiorentina with a powerful attempt from range that was kept out by Andrea Consigli.

The Viola continued to threaten and Consigli was called into action again to thwart Josip Ilicic's strike, before Rossi saw a dangerous shot well blocked.

Despite Fiorentina's dominance, they were pegged back three minutes before half time when Sergio Floccari rose highest at the back post to power in a header from Sime Vrsaljko's cross.

After the break, it was Floccari who threatened once more for the hosts with a curling effort that sailed inches wide of the post.

Moments later Fiorentina came close to restoring their lead when Manuel Pasqual unleashed a powerful drive towards the bottom corner that was turned behind by Consigli.

In the final minute the visitors had another chance to score, but Joan Verdu could only fire over from the edge of the box, and it proved to be the last attempt on goal as both teams were forced to settle for a point.
