Philipp Lahm decided to retire from international football before World Cup

Philipp Lahm reveals that he decided to retire from international football before Germany were crowned World Cup champions.

Germany World Cup-winning captain Philipp Lahm has revealed that he made the decision to retire from international football before the tournament in Brazil.

The 30-year-old has opted to walk away from the German side after they defeated Argentina to seal their fourth world title last weekend.

Despite making the decision last season, the full-back, who can also play in midfield, only told manager Joachim Low the day after Germany's triumph.

Lahm told newspaper Bild: "I told Jogi Low on Monday that I will resign. This decision came to me during last season."

Lahm made 113 appearances for his country following his debut in 2004.
