Leonardo Bonucci explains Mario Balotelli gagging

Leonardo Bonucci reveals that he gagged Mario Balotelli to prevent the Manchester City striker from talking himself into trouble.

Leonardo Bonucci has revealed the reasons behind his decision to gag Mario Balotelli after the striker scored during Italy's 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland last night.

The defender was first to reach Balotelli, who appeared to be aiming a verbal assault at his own bench.

As a result, Bonucci covered the Manchester City striker's mouth with the palm of his hand to prevent him from getting into any trouble.

"What he said [when he scored], he said in English and I didn't understand," said Bonucci. "So I put my hand in front of his mouth just in case, because Mario is instinctive but that is also his strength."

Balotelli started the match as a substitute following two starts without a goal.
