Veteran midfielder Juan Carlos Valeron confirms retirement

Las Palmas midfielder Juan Carlos Valeron announces that he will retire from professional football at the end of the season.

Juan Carlos Valeron has confirmed that he will retire from professional football at the end of the season.

The 40-year-old, who has racked up more than 700 club appearances during a well-travelled career, currently represents Las Palmas in Spain's top flight.

The midfielder started his professional career with Las Palmas in 1994 and has also represented Mallorca, Atletico Madrid and Deportivo La Coruna during his time in Spanish football.

Valeron has branded his second spell at Las Palmas "the best three years" of his career.

"I have decided to retire as a professional footballer at the end of the season. It's a great pleasure and an honour to do it at my home club. I thank all my clubs, and the Las Palmas president for allowing this to be so beautiful," Valeron told Las Palmas's official website.

"I'm very happy for everything I've experienced. I thank my family for all the love and support they have given me. I've had the best three years of my career here. This is like a fairy tale, I couldn't ask for more. I thank the fans for all their love."

The veteran also represented Spain on 46 occasions between 1998 and 2005.
