Report: Steven Gerrard offered England coaching role

A report claims that former England captain Steven Gerrard could take up a coaching position with the national side as the search for Roy Hodgson's successor continues.

Steven Gerrard has been approached by the Football Association over a coaching role with the England national side, according to a report.

The former Three Lions and Liverpool skipper is currently playing in Major League Soccer with Los Angeles Galaxy, although he is expected to bring the curtain down on his career later this year.

England chiefs are on the lookout for a new manager and backroom staff following the departure of Roy Hodgson and his coaching team last Monday, fresh on the back of a humiliating defeat to Iceland at Euro 2016.

It is claimed by The Sun that the FA is keen for Gerrard, capped 114 times by his country before retiring from international football in July 2014, to take up a position as a coach as he gains his UEFA badges.

Gerrard, who is due to return to Anfield in some capacity in November, will also reportedly be asked to assist with the hiring of a new full-time manager to succeed Hodgson.

England's search for a new boss has not got off to the best of starts, with top target Arsene Wenger said to have rejected an approach and Gareth Southgate supposedly happy to remain with the Under-21s.
