Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has praised winger Raheem Sterling following his performance in the Reds' 2-0 win against Newcastle United on Monday night, while playing down his recent off-the-field issues.

The 20-year-old has come under criticism in the last few weeks for stalling on a new contract at Anfield and being allegedly pictured smoking shisha and inhaling nitrous oxide.

Rodgers told Sky Sports News: "He is very valuable. He is a kid who's non-stop, he wants to learn and improve himself. I thought he was outstanding tonight. Wonderful skill and ability for his goal. He presses the ball so well.

"He is a young kid who is in the spotlight now. He knows the demands of being a top class player and professional, both on off the field. I will speak to him about his off-field responsibilities and we will move on."

Liverpool sit fifth in the Premier League table following Monday's win.
