Mamadou Sakho "looking forward" to making Liverpool return

Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho admits that he is "happy" to be able to put his UEFA ban behind him, having successfully appealed against the decision.

Mamadou Sakho has targeted an instant return to the Liverpool team after being given the green light to resume his playing career.

The France international has been left in limbo in recent months as a result of falling foul of UEFA's strict anti-doping laws.

Having tested positive for a fat-burning substance Sakho was forced to sit out the final eight games of Liverpool's campaign, as well as being ruled out of contention for a place in Les Bleus' squad for Euro 2016 on home soil.

UEFA announced on Friday evening that the 26-year-old is now free to play once more, however, with the case being completely dismissed following a successful appeal.

"I am happy that this is finally over," Sakho said. "It's been a difficult time for me but I knew I had done nothing wrong. I am looking forward to getting back in the team and playing again."

A Liverpool statement added: "Liverpool Football Club welcomes today's decision from UEFA to dismiss the case against Mamadou Sakho, confirming that he did not commit any doping violation. We are pleased for Mamadou that he can now resume his playing career."

The Reds picked up a 1-0 win over local neighbours Tranmere Rovers in their opening pre-season fixture.
