Live Commentary: Manchester United 0-0 PSV Eindhoven - as it happened

Relive Manchester United's goalless draw with PSV Eindhoven at Old Trafford as the hosts miss the chance to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League.

Manchester United missed the chance to book their place in the last 16 of the Champions League this evening having been held to a goalless draw by PSV Eindhoven at Old Trafford.

Anthony Martial, Morgan Schneiderlin and Jesse Lingard all squandered decent sights of goal for the home side over the course of the 90 minutes, but ultimately they couldn't find a breakthrough against their resolute visitors.

The result means that United may need to beat Wolfsburg in Germany on the final matchday to qualify for the knockout rounds, depending on how PSV fare against CSKA Moscow.

Good evening! Thank you very much for joining Sports Mole for tonight's Champions League clash between the top two in Group B - Manchester United and PSV Eindhoven. The winners will end the penultimate matchday sitting top of the standings, with three points for United being enough to seal their place in the last 16 with a game to spare. It remains a very tight group, however, so it is still all to play for. Let's start with a look at the two teams...

MAN UTD STARTING XI: De Gea; Darmian, Smalling, Rojo, Blind; Schweinsteiger, Schneiderlin; Lingard, Rooney, Memphis; Martial

MAN UTD SUBS: Romero, McNair, Young, Fellaini, Mata, Pereira, Wilson

PSV STARTING XI: Zoet; Arias, Bruma, Moreno, Brenet; Hendrix, Guardado, Propper, Narsingh; De Jong, Locadia

PSV SUBS: Pasveer, Isimat, Pereiro, Schaars, Maher, Poulsen, Bergwijn

What can we make of those two sides, then? Well the biggest news from a Manchester United perspective is the return of skipper Wayne Rooney to the starting lineup after he missed the weekend's match against Watford through illness. He is expected to play in the number 10 role this evening rather than up front, although both England and Manchester United have experimented with two up top in recent weeks and there is a chance that Rooney could be deployed alongside Martial at times tonight.

If, as expected, there is to be just one lead striker, it is likely to be Martial, who was also ruled out at the weekend but is deemed fit enough to start tonight. The youngster has made a bright start to his United career and is given a central striking role this evening, which is believed to be his favoured position and the one that Van Gaal sees as the best fit for him long term. He will be eager to take his chance up front tonight.

In addition to Rooney just behind him, United also have England's newest call-up Jesse Lingard and, most notably, Memphis Depay. The Dutchman faces his former club this evening having scored 50 goals in 124 appearances for PSV before his summer move to Old Trafford, including 28 goals last season alone. He netted a fine goal at the weekend and also scored in the reverse fixture on his return to the Philips Stadion, and will be particularly keen to keep his place in the side now having been dropped for a spell before his recall on Saturday.

In addition to Rooney and Martial coming back in, Van Gaal has made two further changes to the victorious side from Vicarage Road, and both come in defence. Matteo Darmian is handed a recall at right-back as Young drops to the bench, while Phil Jones is out of the squad entirely having picked up a knock against the Hornets. He is replaced by Rojo, who conceded a late penalty on Saturday, with Blind continuing on the left.

As for the visitors, they have kept changes to a minimum despite dropping points on Saturday, with Moreno one of those to return to the starting lineup tonight. The defender is not likely to get the warmest of receptions here having been the player to break Luke Shaw's leg in the reverse fixture, before levelling the sides just before half time. There was no malice involved in Moreno's tackle on Shaw, but he is still likely to get a bit of abuse from the stands this evening.

He is the only change made by Phillip Cocu in the back five, with Zoet continuing between the sticks and Arias, Bruma and Brenet all retaining their respective roles in defence. There is also minimal change in midfield as Hendric, Guardado and Propper all play once again looking to prevent the likes of Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin from controlling possession as they have done so often this season.

Narsingh does play this evening having netted the winner when these two met in September, but the man who created that goal - and indeed the equaliser - is absent. Maxime Lestienne has not played since matchday two due to personal reasons, and he is again unavailable this evening.

Pereiro may perhaps feel a little hard done by dropping to the bench despite opening the scoring at the weekend, but he is replaced in the starting XI by Narsingh tonight. The other scorer from the 2-2 draw against Willem II on Saturday was De Jong, and he does retain his place up front alongside Locadia. Those two are the biggest threats to the United goal this evening, and their defence will have to keep a close eye on both.

PSV do have the tools to hurt United, then, but there is no doubt that the home side come into this match as favourites tonight. They began the day top of Group B, although Wolfsburg's victory over CSKA in the match just finish has seen the Bundesliga outfit replace the Red Devils at the top of the standings for now. A win for the hosts here would put them back into pole position, however, and even more importantly it will seal their place in the last 16 after a year's break from the competition.

United do remain in a qualifying spot even after that Wolfsburg result, sitting in second, one points better off than PSV. Group B has been one of the tightest in the entire competition, but the signs aren't too encouraging for United when they compare themselves with the other teams currently on track for a place in the last 16. They have scored just five goals in their four group games so far, the lowest tally of any side currently occupying one of the top two spots in a group. Barcelona hit six in one match last night, which perhaps gives some example of how far United still are away from Europe's elite.

It has been a rather strange season for United so far. On first glance, everything is going pretty well for them. Victory tonight would take them into the last 16 of the Champions League, while domestically they are just one point off the top of the Premier League, trailing only surprise package Leicester. However, all is not quite right still, with the fans growing restless at what they perceive to be boring, negative football - certainly not a hallmark of United in years gone by.

I have already mentioned United's struggles in front of goal in the Champions League, but things aren't too much better domestically. They have found the back of the net just 19 times in the Premier League - no team in the top eight has scored fewer. It is at the other end of the pitch where they have impressed, conceding only nine goals in the league, just one of which has come at home. Troy Deeney's penalty at the weekend was the first time that United's defence had been breached in 641 minutes.

Indeed, they have only conceded once in their last six matches and twice in their last eight, winning each of their last three outings. United have not lost inside 90 minutes since that surprise 3-0 loss at the hands of Arsenal on October 4, going eight matches since then without succumbing in normal time. They were knocked out of the League Cup by Championship high-flyers Middlesbrough in that time, but that was via a penalty shootout.

That shootout defeat to Middlesbrough was also the only time that they have ended up on the losing side at Old Trafford this season, with eight wins and three draws from their 11 matches excluding penalties. Again, it is their defence that takes most of the credit for that run, keeping eight clean sheets in that time and conceded only three home goals in all competitions this season. Those clean sheets include an ongoing run of four in a row, so it would be an achievement if PSV were even able to score tonight.

They have won seven and lost none of their last eight Old Trafford matches in this competition too, a run that stretches back to their 2-1 defeat at the hands of Real Madrid in March 2013. The only time they have failed to win during that spell came against Bayern Munich, who could only manage a 1-1 draw here despite arriving as reigning champions. They always seem to at least score here too, last drawing a home Champions League blank in December 2012 - 19 matches ago.

Of course, the United attack has rarely been misfiring as much as it is now during that run, which may give the visitors some extra belief tonight. It is still a tough ask for them to come away with a victory this evening, however, despite having already beaten United once this season. The reward for PSV winning would be huge - going top of Group B and leaving United cast two points adrift in third place going into the final round of fixtures, where PSV face CSKA and United take on Wolfsburg.

Their away record in this competition does not exactly inspire confidence, though, it must be said. They have lost 10 and won only two of their last 13 Champions League away games including qualifiers, while in the Champions League proper it is one win and nine defeats from 11. The most recent victory they have had in this competition excluding qualifiers came back in November 2007, when they beat CSKA.

They have lost both of their Champions League away games this season too, which has seen them slip to third in the group following Wolfsburg's earlier victory. With CSKA now out of the running, PSV will fancy their chances of getting maximum points in their final fixture, but there really is every to play for tonight. A victory would leave them in a fantastic position ahead of the final group game, which a draw would make the group very interesting indeed.

They began the campaign well enough with victory over United, but consecutive defeats to CSKA and Wolfsburg in their two away games saw them lose ground before a good 2-0 victory over the Bundesliga outfit kept them in the race. They are the leading scorers in Group B with six, but at the same time they have conceded the more goals - also with six.

That has been the story of the domestic season for PSV too. Phillip Cocu's side have scored 34 goals in their 13 league games this season - a tally only leaders Ajax can better - but they have also conceded 16 in that time, giving them the worst defence in the top six of the Eredivisie. They currently sit third in the table, four points off Ajax and one behind Feyenoord in the final Champions League spot.

They are in fine form domestically, though, going unbeaten in their last 10 games in league and cup and winning eight of those. Even including Europe, they have won five and lost none of their last six outings, so they certainly shouldn't be lacking in confidence heading into tonight's match. Away from home their last lost just one of their last five in all competitions, with that coming against Wolfsburg in this competition, and that run also includes an impressive win over Ajax - the only defeat the league leaders have suffered in the Eredivisie this season.

While goals have not been a major problem for them in Europe this season, they are still yet to score before the 45th minute in a game, with Moreno first-half stoppage time equaliser against United the earliest they have found the net in their four group games. They have also failed to score more than two goals in any of their last 34 Champions League games, last doing so in the 2005 semi-final against AC Milan.

PREDICTION: We're 10 minutes away from kickoff at Old Trafford, which means that it is time for a prediction! PSV showed in the reverse fixture that they can cause United problems, but their away form in Europe is a lot less impress and ultimately that could prove to be the deciding factor tonight. United rarely blow teams away, but they have a formidable home record under Van Gaal and they should have enough about them to come away with the win tonight. I'll go for a 2-0 home victory.

The history between these two sides is evenly shared with two wins apiece, but it has always favoured the home team. Indeed, there has never been an away victory in this fixture before, with PSV losing on their two previous visits to Old Trafford. The first of those came in 1984-85 when Gordon Strachan's goal gave United a 1-0 victory in the UEFA Cup, while the other came in the 2000-01 Champions League.

United won 3-1 on that occasions, with Sheringham, Scholes and Yorke all on the scoresheet to cancel out Van Bommel's strike for PSV. Today's visitors have lost nine of their 15 visits to England overall, with four wins and two draws thrown into the bargain. The last of those victories came in the 2007-08 UEFA Cup when they beat Tottenham 1-0 at White Hart Lane.

United, meanwhile, have won five of their six home games against Dutch opposition down the years, but their sole loss came the last time a team from the Netherlands came to visit. Ajax were the side to come away with Old Trafford with a 2-1 victory in the 2011-12 Europa League.

The reverse fixture between these two sides was one to forget for United, and not just because they ended up on the losing side. Luke Shaw suffered his horrific leg break in Eindhoven back in September, and the visiting PSV fans have created a banner wishing the left-back the best in his recovery tonight, which is a nice touch.

KICKOFF: Here we go then! PSV get us underway at Old Trafford as they look to pull off a shock and move top of Group B.

The initial lineup looked to have Blind playing on the left and Rojo in the middle, but that isn't the case here. Instead, Blind has swapped back inside to partner Smalling, while Rojo is the man playing on the flank.

Almost a chance for United as Martial makes his way down the right before poking a pass in to Rooney. He in turn helps it on to Memphis, but the ball never sits up right for a shot and United never really look in control. Even so, Memphis is able to move it on once more towards Lingard before PSV finally step in to clear.

SAVE! The first shot of the night comes from United, but it is a rather tame one. A square ball across the pitch around 25 yards from goal found Schweinsteiger in space, but the German doesn't catch his left-footed effort and it trickles comfortably into the arms of Zoet.

Good defensive work from Guardado to prevent Martial from making a break down the right. It was good football from United to create the attacking platform, but Guardado was alert to it.

Not much is happening at the moment to be honest. United are seeing plenty of the ball, like they often do, but not for the first time this season they are using it too slowly to ask any real questions of PSV.

Better from PSV in the last couple of minutes as they begin to see more of the ball, but neither side look particularly like scoring at the moment. It is all rather pedestrian right now.

Concern for PSV here as Narsingh goes down after making a challenge on Rojo, and he immediately points to his hamstring. That could be his game over if it is indeed a muscle strain.

SAVE! Decent effort from Memphis as he picks the ball up on the left wing, throws in a few step-overs and then cuts inside onto his right foot. His effort is hard and low towards the near post, but Zoet makes a fairly routine stop.

PSV are still playing with 10 men incidentally, with Narsingh making his way round the field on his injured hamstring. He will not be able to continue, but PSV have been unable to get a sub on to replace him just yet.

PSV SUB: There is the sub at long last, with Gaston Pereiro the man to replace the injured Narsingh.

Much better from United as they finally come forward with a bit of intent. Darmian bombs down the right to latch on to a fine through-ball, and he then sends a very tempting cross right into the corridor of uncertainty. Rooney throws himself at it, but is just short of making contact.

CHANCE! Good chance for the hosts as Rooney takes the ball in his stride really well on the right before cutting a fine low pass into the box. Martial is in plenty of space, but chooses to dummy the ball instead of taking it on himself. It is a nice idea, but it seems to take Lingard a little by surprise and his touch lets him down as the ball runs through to the keeper.

That was the best opening of the match so far, and still United were unable to get a shot away. They have an element of control over this game, with PSV not looking threatening at all, but United are not making the most of their possession.

PSV are not quite parking the bus, but they aren't showing too much attacking intent either here. A draw would be a good enough result from them heading into the last round of fixtures and they don't look like taking too many risks that might endanger that point.

Having said that, PSV enjoy probably their best spell of possession inside the United half so far. Nothing comes of it, but it is an improvement on the vast majority of this half so far.

United are getting some joy down the right when Rooney especially drifts over there, and the skipper finds himself out wide again here. His cross is another decent one into a testing area, but Bruma is able to clear, with no red shirt attacking the near post.

This time it is Brenet who needs to make an important interception inside the box, knocking the ball behind for a corner following a fine whipped cross from Rojo on the left.

CHANCE! United's best attacking moment of the match comes from the resulting corner as Schneiderlin spins away from his marker and just about latches on to the delivery as it dropped into the box. He can't connect with it properly, however, and Zoet is able to collect it before it trickles over the line.

CHANCE! De Gea is called into action for the first time tonight as PSV get forward on the break. Hendrix gives the ball to De Jong, who returns the favour moments later. Hendrix twists and turns his way into a shooting position before curling one towards the corner, but De Gea makes the diving catch to his left. A warning sign for United.

Another good break from PSV as Memphis slips when trying to take his man on inside the box, allowing Arias to get forward. He finds De Jong, who in turn gives it to Hendrix. The ball moves out wide to the left, but the eventual cross is cleared behind for a corner by Smalling.

Half a chance from the resulting corner as Schweinsteiger misjudges the flight of the ball and Moreno, who scored from a corner in the reverse fixture, gets his head to the ball. It isn't the best effort though, and it is never really troubling De Gea.

CHANCE! Big chance for United to break the deadlock as the ball breaks to Martial after Lingard's effort had been blocked. The angle is slightly against Martial, but he still should do much better than scuffing his effort straight at Zoet, who makes the save at the near post.

Heart-in-mouth moment for Zoet here as he collects the ball inside his own area but then slips when running up to clear it. Rooney is in close attendance, but Zoet manages to react just in time to put it out for a throw-in. Almost a gift for the hosts.

SAVE! PSV have been growing in threat as this half has progressed and they create another shooting chance here. Schneiderlin misses his tackle on De Jong, who brings the ball forward before laying it off for Propper, but the midfielder's effort is tame and easy for De Gea.

Good chance for United to break, but Arias reads Memphis very well to dispossess the winger. Memphis goes down in his attempts to win it back and looks to be in a bit of pain here, holding his knee. It looks like it could be an impact injury, which is good news for United as he should be able to continue.

There will be one additional minute at the end of this first half.

SAVE! United look to go into the break with the lead as Memphis pokes the ball through to Martial, whose powerful low effort towards the near corner is turned behind by Zoet.

HALF TIME: Manchester United 0-0 PSV Eindhoven

It's still goalless at the halfway stage here, then, and in truth it hasn't been the best game so far. United have controlled possession and dominated things for the most part, but it has been the same old story for long spells, with the hosts not playing quickly enough to ask enough questions of PSV. Both sides have had sights of goal, but clear-cut chances have been at a premium.

Perhaps the best of the lot fell to Anthony Martial in the 37th minute as Lingard's blocked shot broke to Martial inside the box. The teenager was in a little bit of space inside the box, but his finish was poor and Zoet made a relatively comfortably stop at his near post. Martial had another sight of goal later in the half which was again turned behind by Zoet at the near post, but the keeper has not been tested nearly enough so far.

Another good chance landed at the feet of Schneiderlin from a corner, but he couldn't get enough on his effort to squeeze it over the line. It almost did trickle over as Schneiderlin's effort came from close range, but Zoet was able to collect it just in time. Lingard also squandered a good opening when he couldn't take Rooney's cross in his stride inside the box, although the blame there must be shared with Martial, who dummied the ball despite being in space inside the area.

There have been chances for the hosts, then, but for the most part they haven't look particularly threatening. They desperately need to up the tempo of their play, with Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin perhaps most responsible for the slow tempo of this game so far. It has been played are far too much of a pedestrian pace, which is doing nothing to draw PSV out of their defensive shape.

PSV haven't offered much themselves in terms of an attacking threat, although they did grow into the half as it wore on. Hendrix tested De Gea with a curling effort that drew a fairly comfortable stop, while Propper also sent a tame effort on target that was easy for the keeper. United have certainly been on top, but they haven't yet done enough to lead the game.

KICKOFF: The hosts get us back underway for this second half as they look to seal their place in the last 16 of the Champions League. No changes for either side at the break.

CHANCE! A chance in the opening minutes of the half for United as they win an early corner. Schneiderlin meets it well and gets plenty of power behind his header, but he can't keep it down.

CHANCE! Another big chance for the home side, and again it comes via the aerial route. Martial swings a good cross into the middle and Lingard is there to glance a header towards the far corner, but it bounces just a yard or so wide.

CHANCE! This has been much better from United in the opening stages of this half. Smalling gets the ball forward quickly, fizzing a pass in to Memphis. He collects it well and cuts inside, but he can't quite get enough power on his effort and Zoet is down low to his right to save it.

This second-half performance is already a big improvement on the first, with United injecting more pace into their attacks which is making it harder for PSV to settle into a defensive unit. If they can keep this up then an opening goal may not be far away.

Half a chance at the other end of the field for PSV as De Jong picks the ball up in the right channel before working himself a yard up against Blind. The angle is always against the PSV skipper, though, and his effort is skewed high and wide of the near post.

That intensity that United started this half with has quickly worn off, and it is again too pedestrian from them right now. They are playing the match at walking pace, with Smalling the only player looking to zip passes into the strikers.

PSV do deserve credit for how they have defended in this match so far, but at the same time they haven't been tested enough by United considering how much possession the hosts have enjoyed.

MAN UTD SUBS: A couple of changes form the hosts as Schweinsteiger and Memphis depart to be replaced by Marouane Fellaini and Ashley Young.

PSV SUB: PSV also make a change as Hendrix is replaced by Nicolas Isimat-Mirin for the final half an hour.

SAVE! Really good effort from Propper as the ball breaks to him outside the box and he juggles it on the run to move into a shooting position. His eventual effort comes on the half-volley, but once more it is straight at De Gea, who makes a simple stop.

PSV will be very happy with how things are going at the moment. They are looking relatively comfortable defensively and carry a hint of a threat going forward, although in truth neither side look like scoring any time soon.

Good defending from Smalling as De Jong flicked the ball over the top of the United defender's head and looked to collect it on the other side. Smalling holds the striker off, however, and eventually wins a rather soft free kick to save him from an awkward position.

SHOT! Really good chance for PSV to break as Rooney is caught in possession as the ball dropped to him from a United corner. The visitors counter and have a three-on-three situation, but Locadia eventually wastes the chance when he drags an effort wide. He was far too eager to get a shot off there when PSV had the numbers up with him.

United are running out of time here. They have just 20 minutes to get a goal that would see them through to the last 16, but right now their chances aren't looking great. They have struggled to create clear-cut openings here and, although they do deserve to be winning on the balance of play, PSV will feel fairly comfortable right now.

Big chance for PSV to come forward. Arias plays a one-two and leaves Rojo in his wake to burst down the right flank in acres of space. He has the time to pick his head up and look for teammates in the box, but his poor cross is blocked by Smalling.

SAVE! Propper has had a few cracks from range tonight, but this is the fiercest of the lot so far. He really catches hold of a long-range effort and, while it is again straight at De Gea, this time the Spanish keeper needs two attempts to collect it.

CHANCE! Huge chance for United to break the deadlock! Blind pings a beauty of a pass down to Young on the right, and the sub's first touch is perfect. His cross takes a deflection, but that takes it into the path of Lingard. The youngster has to take it first time, but he leans back and spoons it over the bar when he should have scored.

PSV are beginning to carry more and more of a threat here and, right now, it is the visitors who look the most like scoring. Zoet has barely been troubled since the opening stages of the second half, and the hosts are on the back foot at the moment.

As things stand, then, just two points would separate the top three sides in Group B going into the final matchday. United would occupy second place, but crucially they would have to face Wolfsburg in Germany, while PSV have a home tie against CSKA Moscow, who are already out. If things stay like this, the Red Devils may need a win in Germany to progress.

Brilliant defending from Bruma as he thwarts a promising United break with a fine tackle on Young as the winger was winding up to deliver the ball into the box. Bruma has been very impressive at the back tonight.

Less than 10 minutes remain here at Old Trafford and, right now, the hosts look short of ideas. In truth, they have looked short of ideas for the vast majority of this second half and they are in danger of losing this game the more open it becomes in the closing stages.

YELLOW CARD! De Jong takes one for the team here as he pulls Lingard down to prevent the United man from breaking after a PSV corner.

MAN UTD: Van Gaal makes a final throw of the dice with his third change of the evening, and it is an attacking one as Juan Mata replaces Darmian.

Rooney has dropped so deep now, switching places with Fellaini, who has been lumped up front for the long balls forward. There simply has to be a better plan B for United considering the money they have spent in recent years.

Just two minutes of normal time remain here at Old Trafford, and we're no closer to any side breaking the deadlock. The stats from this game will all be in United's favour, but they really haven't done enough to win this match.

There will be three additional minutes at the end of this match. United, remember, need just one goal to book their place in the last 16. If they fail to get it then they may well need to win in Germany against Wolfsburg on the final matchday.

Where is the urgency for United here? They have been so lacklustre here tonight.

YELLOW CARDS! Lingard and Arias both go into the book late here following a tussle that ultimately results in a deep United free kick that comes to nothing.

FULL TIME: Manchester United 0-0 PSV Eindhoven

It's all over at Old Trafford and the spoils are shared between Manchester United and PSV Eindhoven following a goalless 90 minutes. United had the better of possession and did create enough chances to have won this game, but their general play was far too slow and in truth it was a very uninspiring performance from Louis van Gaal's side. PSV set up to come away with a point and they have done exactly that, which means that it is all to play for on the final matchday.

That is all we have time for this evening! Thank you very much for joining Sports Mole for what was a frustrating evening for United as they failed to make the breakthrough against a stubborn PSV outfit. I will leave you with our match report, and be sure to stick around for reaction, analysis and player ratings. From me, though, it is goodbye for now!
