Manchester United's quest to reach the last 16 of the Champions League will go to their final group game after they were held to a 0-0 draw at home to PSV Eindhoven this evening.

The hosts enjoyed the lion's share of possession and created a few chances at Old Trafford, but they couldn't find the goal that would have sealed a place in the knockout rounds with a game to spare.

Here, Sports Mole looks at who stood out on a frustrating night for Louis van Gaal's side.

MAN UTD

Goal

David de Gea: Was never called into any serious action, with all of PSV's shots on target being routine stuff for a keeper of his quality. (6/10)

Defence

Matteo Darmian: A decent game both going forward and at the back. Most of United's joy came down the flanks, with his crosses testing PSV as much as anything else that the hosts conjured up. (6/10)

Chris Smalling: Was once again United's standout defender on the night, making a few important interceptions on the rare occasions that he was called into action. His passing was a bit of a mixed bag, but he was at times the only player looking to get it forward to the strikers with any pace. (7/10)

Daley Blind: Solid at the back against De Jong and also acts as a very deep-lying playmaker from central defence. His range of passing was impressive tonight. (7/10)

Marcos Rojo: Sent one beauty of a cross into the area, but that is as good as it got. Failed to make much of an impact on the game going forward and was caught out of position on a couple of occasions. (6/10)

Midfield

Morgan Schneiderlin: His passing was accurate enough but not fast enough. He also struggled to stop PSV's counter-attacks when the visitors looked to surge forward on the break. (5/10)

Bastian Schweinsteiger: The pace of United's play was far too slow this evening, and that all stems from Schweinsteiger. He didn't use the possession positively enough and struggled with his defensive duties too before being hauled off with less than an hour gone. (5/10)

Jesse Lingard: Perhaps the one positive from this performance. He looked bright and, while he squandered a couple of very presentable chances, he did at least look to inject a bit of pace into the attack which was sorely lacking for far too long. (7/10)

Wayne Rooney: Found some good space out to the right in the first half and sent some fine crosses into the middle. Dropped deeper and deeper as the match wore on, though, and ended up in defensive midfield when his side needed a goal at the end. (6/10)

Memphis Depay: Did not offer enough against his former club, with Arians seemingly having his number down the flank. Another who was taken off before the hour mark. (5/10)

Attack

Anthony Martial: Linked up pretty well with Lingard at times but needed a little more help from other players around him. Also guilty of missing a couple of good chances in the first half. (6/10)

Substitutes

Marouane Fellaini: Is he the best United have when things aren't going their way? Came on with more than half an hour remaining but made little to no difference. Gave the ball away with some poor touches and certainly didn't improve United's slow tempo. (5/10)

Ashley Young: Provided more energy than Depay and brought something different to the United attack with a few decent balls into the box. Ultimately unable to make a real difference, though. (6/10)

Juan Mata: United were screaming out for a player who could break down this PSV defence, which makes it all the more bemusing why Mata was only given five minutes at the end, during which time he barely had a touch. (6/10)

Goal

Jeroen Zoet: Was called into action on a few occasions and made some smart saves at his near post, although he would have been upset had any of United's efforts found their way in. (7/10)

Defence

Santiago Arias: Had Depay's number more often than not and also proved to be a good outlet on a few occasions as he led counter-attacks forward. (7/10)

Jeffrey Bruma: At the heart of a stubborn defensive performance from PSV. Always seemed to be in the right place to deal with the danger. (7/10)

Hector Moreno: Had a quieter evening than the reverse fixture, but still played an important role for PSV as he helped to keep the United attack at bay. (7/10)

Joshua Brenet: United found space down his flank now and again, but the left-back defended crosses into the box well and was rarely caught out. (7/10)

Midfield

Andres Guardado: Afforded his defence some invaluable protection alongside his fellow midfielders. Was also tidy on the ball, helping to launch attacks quickly after United's had broken down. (7/10)

Jorrit Hendrix: Brought the only diving save from De Gea with a curling effort in the first half and helped to make PSV very difficult to play through by getting behind the ball. (6/10)

Davy Propper: Proved to be PSV's biggest goal threat with a few long-range drives, although they were all straight at De Gea. Another who put himself about in midfield to protect those behind him. (7/10)

Attack

Luciano Narsingh: Lasted less than 20 minutes before being taken off with what looked like a hamstring injury. (6/10)

Luuk de Jong: Had to wait for his chances to be involved, but when he did get the ball he held it up well and made a nuisance of himself up against the United defenders. (7/10)

Jurgen Locadia: Most of his work was done inside his own half this evening, although he did help to provide a threat on the counter-attack. (6/10)

Substitutes

Gaston Pereira: Looked bright on the ball at times, with PSV looking like a better team after he replaced the injured Narsingh in the 18th minute. (6/10)

Nicolas Isimat-Mirin: Replaced Hendrix on the hour mark as PSV switched shape again. Helped the visitors to see out the draw. (6/10)
