Harry Redknapp claims that Wayne Rooney's suspension for the 2012 European Championships could cost England "dearly".

Harry Redknapp believes that Wayne Rooney's red card against Montenegro yesterday evening could hamper England's chances of succeeding at the European Championships in 2012.

The Manchester United striker was handed his marching orders during the second half of England's 2-2 draw in Podgorica for kicking Montenegro's Miodrag Dzudovic from behind.

The draw was enough to seal progression for England, but they could be without Rooney for up to three matches.

"It's hugely disappointing," the Tottenham Hotspur manager wrote in his column in The Sun. "He could be missing for the entire group stage and the rush of blood could end up costing him and England dearly.

"A likely two-game ban at the start of the Euro 2012 finals is a massive, massive blow for England.

"He just cannot go around doing that sort of thing. We thought we'd seen the last of it but I guess he had his angry head on after all."

England boss Fabio Capello has since defended his decision to select Rooney for the match.
