Half-Time Report: Ryan Giggs own-goal gives Sunderland the lead against Manchester United

Sunderland lead Manchester United 1-0 at the interval of their League Cup semi-final tie at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland have gone in with a 1-0 lead against Manchester United at half time in their League Cup semi-final clash at the Stadium of Light.

Ryan Giggs put through his own net with virtually the last kick of the half as Gustavo Poyet's side made the most of a late free kick before the interval.

In a first half devoid of any real goalmouth activity, it was the home side who shaded things with Marcos Alonso causing problems with a succession of crosses from the left side.

Phil Bardsley had an effort saved by David de Gea after the full-back had spun on the edge of the box towards the end of the half.

Earlier in the game, Fabio Borini fizzed a shot wide after wriggling free of Nemanja Vidic, before Giggs headed onto the top of the crossbar for United.

Adnan Januzaj lost Lee Cattermole with some terrific play before his dangerous low cross was cleared by former Red Devils defender Wes Brown.

With the first period seemingly coming to a goalless conclusion, Sebastian Larsson swung a free kick in before it was nudged across the face of the goal and Giggs converted into his own net under pressure from Bardsley.
