Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho insists that captain Wayne Rooney is "ready" to face Arsenal despite his recent England controversy.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has insisted that Wayne Rooney is "ready" to play against Arsenal when the two sides meet at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Rooney was forced to apologise recently after pictures surfaced of him celebrating at a wedding in the wake of England's 3-0 victory over Scotland last Friday.

The FA has since opened an investigation into the incident and could reportedly even strip the 31-year-old of the captaincy, but Mourinho distanced himself from the controversy.

"Over the last two or three days nothing happened. He trained and wants to play. He is ready. What happened in the national team I don't comment on," he told reporters.

"He belonged to the national team. I don't interfere for good or bad. Sometimes players come back stronger than when they left because something positive happened.

"Other times they are not as strong because of injuries or frustration because result was bad. We know what didn't go well but it is a different chapter that is closed until March."

Rooney will reportedly be benched for the visit of Arsenal having only started one of United's last six matches.
