Gary Neville: 'Midfield is not Wayne Rooney's best position'

Manchester United legend Gary Neville insists that club captain Wayne Rooney is better deployed up front as opposed to in midfield.

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has said that midfield isn't Wayne Rooney's best position.

Rooney has been deployed in a deeper-lying midfield role under Louis van Gaal over the past month, but was recently restored to his original berth up top in United's defeat to Swansea City.

"I don't think midfield is Wayne Rooney's best position," Neville told talkSPORT.

"I think what happened at Man United earlier on in the season was he was put there out of necessity because of injuries and he's ended up staying there.

"Now he seems to have gone back [to being a forward] and I certainly think he's better up top."

United currently hold fourth spot in the Premier League table.
