Wayne Rooney to replace Nemanja Vidic as Manchester United captain?

Wayne Rooney could be handed the Manchester United captaincy before the end of the season, according to reports.

Manchester United manager David Moyes has reportedly decided to hand the captaincy to Wayne Rooney before the end of the current season.

The club were set to name a new captain in the summer following the news that Nemanja Vidic would be leaving Old Trafford, with a move to Inter Milan being confirmed on Wednesday.

However, according to the Daily Star, Moyes has identified Rooney as the perfect replacement to take the armband and he could be willing to make the change prior to Vidic's exit.

A club source reportedly said: "His current captain is leaving and promoting Wayne, the team's talisman, is the logical thing to do because he is the future."

Rooney recently signed a new five-year deal with United.
