Manchester United to replace Louis van Gaal with Carlo Ancelotti?

Carlo Ancelotti could become manager of Manchester United if they decide to part ways with Louis van Gaal, according to a report.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti could reportedly replace Louis van Gaal as Manchester United boss during the summer.

The 55-year-old Italian has come under pressure after his side scraped through to the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday night, with some Real supporters showing their anger with the 4-3 defeat in the second leg.

Ancelotti, who guided Los Blancos to their 10th European crown last season, has also witnessed Real relinquish top spot in La Liga recently.

Former Bayern Munich and Netherlands boss Van Gaal is currently in the middle of his first season as United manager, but the Dutchman will end it without a trophy after his side were knocked out of the FA Cup by Arsenal on Monday evening.

Van Gaal is on course to guide United into the Premier League's top four but according to Spanish newspaper Marca, he could leave Old Trafford depending on how the season finishes.

The report cites a link made between United and Ancelotti which goes back to the Sir Alex Ferguson era, when the Scot reportedly identified Ancelotti as his ideal successor when he retired at the end of the 2012-13 season.

Ancelotti lifted the Premier League title and FA Cup during his time as Chelsea boss between 2009 and 2011.
